Stop the Dog Ban
It’s a common sight in Fremantle to see people and their dogs outside cafés. It’s part of Fremantle’s café culture, it’s good for business, it has never presented as a health risk. Recently there has been a long standing law that has been revisited, which enables dogs to be banned from alfresco areas in WA.
You can show your support to stop the dog ban at the Dogs Breakfast it’s on at the South Beach Café Sundays at 11.00 am.
If you want more information on how you can help please contact Phil for further details on 0414 096 847 or e-mail info@globalfreedomtechnologies.com.

Hymen Complete Grooming
Every time I walk past Numen Barbers on the corner of Leake and Market Street I look at their sign and I read hymen. Maybe it’s because they’ve used a v instead of a u I’m not really sure why it reads that way.
Update 23/11/09: OK I’m a tool I’ve been told it reads N V Men, envy Men, ahhhh ok, all this time I’ve been calling it Numen. However it still reads hymen

…tons of cool music about this weekend. Why don’t all the muso places of Freo keep their sites updated? I’ve noticed a lot of great looking gig flyers and posters around town this week but can’t find much online. Ho hum.
So Tijuana Cartel on Sunday at Mojo’s will no doubt be brilliant (they are also on tonight at Fly By Night), but also worth checking out tonight are Shooting from the Hip, and tomorrow night Boom Bam Pow, to raise awareness of domestic violence.
There’s also live music every night this w/e at Creatures Loft and the CD launch of the DomNicks at Clancy’s. Unfortunately I’ll be somewhere between City Beach and the city taking my sister’s clan to the aeroport. Oh, in another scoop for Metropolis Fremantle, Jarivs Cocker is coming here in December: he is the chap who famously (perhaps) ran up on stage and bared his arse to Michael Jackson. But he’s also a great singer/songwriter and once front man of 90s indie(ish) band Pulp. Get tickets now, you won’t be disappointed.

MJ wasn't impressed by his butt.

Café 55 – Pukka Food
I’m kicking myself that I haven’t been to this wonderful little eatery sooner: I was put off once by their specials board declaring some dish with peanuts, and peanuts have me running for the hills (a severe nut allergy rather than a legume phobia), and I didn’t make it back to give them a second chance, more fool me.
I love curries, I love south-east Asian curries in particular and now I have finally been to this place I have a whole menu to explore. I was too busy chatting with Michelle – the Love Freo blog-reader who insisted I try this place out – to do anything useful, like write down what my dish was called, or make a note of their opening hours. But I did get this superbly average picture with the Love Freo phone-cam which doesn’t really come close to doing the food justice.
My lamb curry was delicious, rich in flavour, with good quality non-fatty lamb, and cost about 10 bucks, which for Freo is an absolute bargain. The blonde likes a good laksa too, so I’d say we’ll be fairly regular at this gaff.

Delicious food at Cafe 55. The fly on the papadum (not the Cafe's fault) was just an added bonus.
Thanks to Michelle for suggesting this place. People please feel free to suggest any other glaring omissions from the Love Freo food hall. Next week: Hungry Jack’s!

Yacht Race Carnage
There aren’t many sites quite like the annual Fremantle Harbour Classic. The whole of the port packed to the gills with racing yachts, which are set off at staggered time intervals (like a sort of sailing handicap system) with the intention being that all of the competitors arrive at the finishing line at about the same time.

Spinnakers out for the down-wind start of the Fremantle Harbour Classic
Great to watch and outstanding potential for yacht collisions. Fortunately there was only one this year and Love Freo was on hand (just) to capture it happening.

Oi! Get yo' hands off my yacht
And the Esplanade was also stuffed to the gills again today, many people, lots to see and do. Fun times. More pics coming soon.

Carybdea Xaymacana
Not a catchy name, but these little blighters are a pain in the a**e when trying to swim lengths along South Beach. Seems they swarm about in the shallow waters, which might explain why I see people swimming much further out. And it’s not like there’s anything to worry about out there. So I’m sitting here resisting the temptation to scratch, and unable to frown or smile because my face has been involuntarily botoxed.
Surf Lifesaving have dedicated a whole fact sheet to them: at least the sting is only minor.

Crane Ahoy
Yesterday the Port of Fremantle invited Love Freo up to the viewing deck of their building to get some pics of its latest acquisition: a massive new crane. The Port sees a number of weird and wonderful vessel bringing in their wares from all over the world, but the delivery of a new crane is a relatively rare event, and quite an unusual thing to watch.

Big Crane on a Big Ship
The crane, which weighs 918 tonnes, arrived on the Happy Buccaneer from Brisbane just after lunch. It was due to be unloaded today and installed at Berth 7, where it will spend its days shifting containers about.

Crane Ship Manoeuvres its Way In
I always thought these cranes were assembled on site like some sort of enormous Meccano project. But actually, like everything else that it is steel, it was made in China. It was a great thing to watch, and from probably the best view point in the whole of the Perth area. This made me think what a great location the Port’s viewing platform would make for a cocktail bar; in fact can you think of a better place to watch the sunset and sip on a margarita? An express elevator to the top floor, some attentive cocktail waitresses, a DJ in the corner = Fremantle heaven.

View From the Top
Many thanks to the Port for the invite, thoroughly enjoyed it!

Healthy Balance
Somehow the closer I get to the end of the year, the busier my life seems to get. Not only am I flat out at work, my social calendar is bursting as well. That’s great, but I have to remind myself to keep a healthy balance – like displayed on this old Freo building: 8 hours work, 8 hours leisure, 8 hours sleep. My life is currently something like 10-9-5 (I guess if it was 5-9-10 I wouldn’t complain).
