Café 55 – Pukka Food
I’m kicking myself that I haven’t been to this wonderful little eatery sooner: I was put off once by their specials board declaring some dish with peanuts, and peanuts have me running for the hills (a severe nut allergy rather than a legume phobia), and I didn’t make it back to give them a second chance, more fool me.
I love curries, I love south-east Asian curries in particular and now I have finally been to this place I have a whole menu to explore. I was too busy chatting with Michelle – the Love Freo blog-reader who insisted I try this place out – to do anything useful, like write down what my dish was called, or make a note of their opening hours. But I did get this superbly average picture with the Love Freo phone-cam which doesn’t really come close to doing the food justice.
My lamb curry was delicious, rich in flavour, with good quality non-fatty lamb, and cost about 10 bucks, which for Freo is an absolute bargain. The blonde likes a good laksa too, so I’d say we’ll be fairly regular at this gaff.

Delicious food at Cafe 55. The fly on the papadum (not the Cafe's fault) was just an added bonus.
Thanks to Michelle for suggesting this place. People please feel free to suggest any other glaring omissions from the Love Freo food hall. Next week: Hungry Jack’s!

Cocktails at Maya
Cocktail is one of my favourite words. Because I’m a child at heart really.
Anyway, while I’ve been drinking overpriced imported beer elsewhere in Fremantle, Emily Tchan checked out the cocktails at the new lounge above Maya Indian Restaurant on Market Street. She had this to say about it:
It is a very small, simply decorated candlelit bar. We were surprised to find out that the prices are extremely reasonable, compared to some of the inflated prices of Fremantle. The cocktails are fantastic, the (only) waiter is great (think there may have been a few return visitors for him). They also have bottled beer and a good wine list. I recommend trying the Goa Sunrise (not the full name, a mature sex on the beach) with fresh pineapple, truly to die for. Very exciting for Freo.
Thanks for sending that to us Emily. Exciting indeed, hopefully this will be start the start of the Fremantle cocktail revolution. BTW, their food is great too.

Noodle 6159
You’d probably never find out about Noodle 6159 unless- a) you live very close to North Freo Fresh or, b) someone told you about them. Hopefully we will now be the 3rd voice for this great little noodle bar, which is hidden somewhat cryptically inside the North Freo Fresh grocery store. You also have to be lucky enough to stumble through their door on a Thursday night, because that is the only night they fry them up (until 9pm at the moment, and also Fri, Sat, Sun in the summer).

Noodle Men Toil Behind Noodle Bar
The concept is simple. Choose a flavour, choose a style, choose a noodle type. Small or large portion ($10/$14). Large portion; YES. They were very tasty, and not much was said while we scoffed them down, then drinking the last of the sauce from the New York style noodle boxes . The guys are super friendly and we’d highly recommend dropping down there one Thursday to try them out (the noodles, that is). You can also check out their curious wall of snow domes, brought back from all over the world by faithful customers.

Return to Breaks
Yesterday I had the good fortune to be quite hungry as I was walking past Breaks, so I popped in there with the blonde’s bro for a bite to eat. As this place used to be Soho Soho burger bar, we decided to have a ‘Moo’ burger each…

I like my burgers, and this was an excellent one. The mince was juicy and full of flavour, obviously from a nice piece of beef, the bun was fresh, fluffy and just a bit crispy and the chips were covered in some sort of magic salt that prompted us to go for an extra portion. A great value meal, v v tasty. The flat white was good too.
If you’ve walked past this place and though it looks small, think again, behind the large counter area is a full dining area. Next time you fancy a burger, you could do much worse than go here. You can also pick up one of our new and free LOVE FREO promo postcards that the friendly manager/owner(?) let us put on the counter. Bon apetit. One more thing, Breaks doesn’t have a licence, but you can BYO.

A Change of Menu?
Most of the Love Freo gang went on a little road trip to Kalgoorlie over the weekend, hence the absence of any posts. As a result we got back to Fremantle quite late on Sunday night and we were all starving. So we shuffled off to Little Creatures happy that they serve late-night food.
As I scanned down the card I realised I’ve nearly had everything on the menu several times over (see highlighted items below, I’m not a fan of mushrooms so I leave those alone). I know that they added a few new items to their menu a couple of months ago and took some off but I’d love to see Little Creatures do weekly specials in the solo plate, shared plate and the wood-fired pizza just to keep things interesting for the locals.

Ecco Fatto
Ecco in Fremantle have a chalkboard sign outside their restaurant saying best pizza 2009, so without any further persuasion myself and The Brunette went in to see if this lofty but unsubstantiated claim was true. We had a wander around upstairs to check out the balcony area: nice job on the decoration. We went back downstairs and sat downstairs it was a bit cold and there was no heaters outside. We ordered the Napoletana and the Spinaci. The pizza was really good nice base, crisp bubbly around the edges and the right amount of toppings. Another thing the waitress was great really helpful, good service makes a huge difference when you’re dining out.
They also do a lunch menu pizza-deal, I think it’s $14 or $15 per pizza but the selection is limited to about 6. I will check the price and update this post.

Joy Kitchen, Miserable Day
Myself and the Brunette ate out again last night, every time you drive past Joy Kitchen it’s full so we decided to give it a go (plus we’ve had a few recommendations).
We booked a table about an hour in advance and we were glad we did the place was packed. The manager was really stressed and looked as if he needed to start delegating. After a bit of a wait he found us an anxious looking waitress to escort us to our table: a bleak little spot beside the door. Thankfully the door didn’t let in the gale force winds that were blowing outside every time it opened so I was happy.
I’m going through a bit of a dumpling/ravioli phase at the moment so I went for the dumplings for and entrée, The Brunette had, oddly enough, prawn toast. I never tasted this before and I don’t think I’ll be trying it again. The mains went down well, my beef and asparagus had loads of asparagus and it and the beef was perfectly cooked. The Mongolian lamb was meat-tastic and came out sizzling which made me think of Asian fajitas, but the dish was a little too sweet for me.
Notes: The restaurant prices are the same as the take away ones. There’s a $8 charge for corkage which I think is a little steep.
